- Please Help Us!
-
-
- FileManager is not "free" or public domain software, but is being
- offered as "shareware." That means we are not spending money on
- distribution costs so that your cost can remain very low! The only
- way we can get FileManager to a lot of people is if you help.
-
- Please give FileManager to everyone you know! Please help place
- FileManager on as many bulletin boards as possible. The only way
- we can ever hope to make amy money from FileManager is if enough
- people try it and like it so that they will register themselves
- (which means they'll send us money!) and receive future updates to
- the program at a reduced rate.
-
- The only thing we ask when you give out FileManager is that you
- observe the following:
-
- ∙ FileManager must be copied in unmodified form,
- complete with any documentation file supplied,
-
- ∙ No fee or charge may be accepted or requested, and
-
- ∙ FileManager may not be distributed with any other
- product or service without prior written permission
- from Stouse Technology, Inc.
-
-
- Ordering Information
-
- Registering FileManager licenses you to use the program as often as
- you like, on as many computers as you like (provided you are the
- only person using FileManager). Users need only register one time:
- all subsequent versions of FileManager are automatically registered
- to you. You will automatically receive notification of updates to
- the program as they become available. Updates to registered users
- are available at a nominal fee of $10.00 by calling or writing to
- Stouse Technology, Inc.
-
- To register as a FileManager user or order FileManager or
- FileManager documentation, please use the order form found on the

-
- FileManager is a software tool originally developed to help us do
- most of our DOS-related tasks. Since then, it has been revised
- extensively because of user feedback. If you have any ideas that
- you feel would make FileManager a better product for everyone,
- please let us know! Now you don't have to be a computer expert, or
- know a computer expert, to begin using a microcomputer. Listed
- below are some of the ways that FileManager makes this easy for
- you:
-
-
- ∙ Display Files ── in any subdirectory on any disk
- drive, or only those files on a disk drive that
- match a certain file specification; when displaying
- files, FileManager can make full use of EGA or VGA
- monitor display capabilities.
-
- ∙ Copy, Delete, Move Files.
-
- ∙ Print Files ── using a wide variety of print
- options, print single files, groups of files,
- subdirectory listings, or only those files matching
- certain file specification(s); control codes can be
- sent to the printer for various purposes (to put the
- printer into compressed, print, emphasized print,
- landscape mode, etc.).
-
- ∙ Archive/Zip Files ── using any archiving program,
- you can add to, extract from, move to, create self-
- extracting program, test, or list contents of a
- file.
-
- ∙ Edit Files ── with FileManager's built-in editor,
- you can edit ASCII files.
-
- ∙ Browse Files ── no matter what kind or how large a
- file is (even executable or hidden files); use full
- up, down and sideways scrolling; in hexadecimal
- browse, you can change a file, byte-by-byte; from
- browse, you can print part or all of a file in
- either ASCII or hexadecimal format.
-
- ∙ Find Files that Contain Text String ── produce a
- list (or tag) all files in the current subdirectory
- that contain a string of text.
-
- ∙ Where Is File Specification ── produce a list of all
- files that match a certain file specification.
-
-
- ∙ Display Tree Structure of Hard Disk's Contents ──
- allowing you to switch to different subdirectories
- more easily; the tree structure display can also be
- printed.
-
- ∙ Sort Files ── by file name, extension and file name,
- file size, date & time, only tagged files, or no
- sort.
-
- ∙ Execute Programs or Batch Files ── use FileManager
- as a DOS shell, provided you have sufficient RAM.
-
- ∙ Load a Highlighted File into a Program and Execute
- ── when you want to work with a certain file and
- your favorite word processor, text editor,
- spreadsheet, etc., simply highlight the file and
- press a key; FileManager loads that file into the
- program so you can begin working immediately.
-
- ∙ Perform DOS Tasks ── format floppy disks, run
- CHKDSK, determine hardware configuration, change
- file attributes.
-
-
- FileManager has three different display modes:
-
-
- 1. A primary display mode in which up to 56 files and/or
- subdirectories (128 in EGA mode or 156 in VGA mode) at a
- time can be displayed.
-
- 2. An alternate display mode in which up to 14 files and/or
- subdirectories (32 in EGA mode or 39 in VGA mode) at a
- time can be displayed.
-
- 3. A tree structure display listing all subdirectories on a
- specified drive.

- What's New in FileManager 5.2?
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀

-
-
- Lots of things!
-
- In fact, FileManager 5.2 is a complete rewrite from previous
- versions. FileManager has received a "facelift" in the form of
- pulldown menus. Most commands can be accessed either through the
- pulldown menus or directly by a single keystroke. FileManager now
- employs overlays to decrease the amount of RAM used ── these
- overlays are automatically loaded into EMS if available to speed up
- the various operations.
-
- The following is a complete list of the new features of FileManager
- 5.2:
-
-
- ∙ Overlays ── most of the features of FileManager have
- been placed into overlays so the amount of RAM used
- is significantly decreased.
-
- ∙ Uses EMS for Overlays if available.
-
- ∙ Pulldown Menus ── all of FileManager's features can
- be accessed through the pulldown menus. However,
- most of the features can still be accessed through a
- single keystroke. Horizontal scrolling through the
- pulldown menus makes it easy to find a desired
- feature.
-
- ∙ Archive/Zip File ── up to 9 different archiving
- programs can now be configured into FileManager,
- providing maximum flexibility with today's wealth of
- archiving programs available. Two new features have
- been added to the archiving capability:
-
- ∙ Move tagged files into archive file.
- ∙ Create self-extracting file from archive
- file (if the archiving program supports
- this feature).
-
- ∙ Copy ── files can now appended together to form a
- new file.
-
- ∙ Move ── file(s) can now be moved to a different disk
- drive in one step.
-
- ∙ Delete ── files matching a certain file
- specification can be deleted without having to first
- display that file specification on the screen.
-
-
- ∙ Whereis ── can now act on the following drives:
-
- ∙ Act on current drive only.
- ∙ Act on all hard disks & RAM disks.
- ∙ Act on all disks (floppy, hard & RAM).
-
- ∙ Help ── complete online help is now available for
- all of FileManager's features. The help can be
- activated in any of the following ways:
-
- ∙ By pulldown menu.
- ∙ By feature.
- ∙ By keystroke.
-
- ∙ Display Color Attributes ── displays all 256 color
- attributes with their corresponding values.
-
- ∙ Display ASCII Table ── displays all 256 ASCII
- characters with their corresponding values in both
- decimal and hexadecimal.
-
- ∙ Print ── when printing a single file, the printout
- can start at a specific line number.
-
- ∙ Browse ── find text while in hexadecimal mode.
-
- ∙ Appointment Scheduler ── a full-featured appointment
- scheduler that is compatible with SideKick's
- appointment files. Appointments can be
- viewed/modified in the following ways:
-
- ∙ Entered/changed as a single occurrence.
- ∙ Entered/changed as a recurring entry.
- ∙ Displayed on-screen.
- ∙ Printed a month at a time.
- ∙ Printed for the next # of days.
-
- ∙ Installation Program ── completely rewritten to
- support all of FileManager's new features. In
- addition, it is now easier to select colors for
- various features.
-
- ∙ Whizbangs ── the following are user-configurable:
-
- ∙ Exploding windows on/off
- ∙ Shadows on windows on/off
- ∙ Sound effects on/off
- ∙ All sound on/off
- ∙ More control of colors
-

-
-
- FileManager is designed primarily as a utility for hard disk-based
- machines but will also work for floppy disk-based systems. It's
- been tested on 8088's, 80286's and 80386's using monochrome, CGA,
- EGA and VGA monitors. It should run on any true MS-DOS compatible
- computer.
-
- To benefit from all of FileManager's capabilities, you need a
- minimum of 350K of free RAM on your computer (run CHKDSK.COM if you
- are unsure how much free RAM is available).
-
- FileManager should be ready to run when you receive it. You can
- select it from a menu system or run it from a DOS prompt (e.g.,
- C:\>, C:\FM>, A:\>, etc.). If you are running FileManager from a
- DOS prompt, type the word, FM, and then press <Enter>:
-
-
- C:\> FM <Enter>
-
-
- Moving Around the Screen
-
-
- Whether you select FileManager from a menu system or run it from a
- DOS prompt, a display window will pop up listing up to 56 files and
- subdirectories in normal mode, 128 files in EGA mode or 156 files
- in VGA mode. If there are no files or subdirectories in a
- directory, a message to that effect appears. If there are more
- than 56 files (or 128 of 156) in the directory, you can display the
- additional files using any of the following methods:
-
- ∙ To move up or down the list, highlighting one file
- at a time, press <UpAr> or <DnAr>.
-
- ∙ To highlight files to the left or right, one column
- at a time, press <LtAr> or <RtAr>.
-
- ∙ To page up or down, 56 (or 128 or 156)
- files/subdirectories at a time, press <PgUp> or
- <PgDn>.
-
- ∙ To jump to the end of the list, press <End>; to jump
- to the beginning of the list, press <Home>.
-
- Pressing <Enter> when a file is highlighted causes a window to
- appear showing the date and time the file was created or last
- modified, as well as its file attribute(s). Pressing <Enter> when
- a directory is highlighted causes the directory to be accessed and
- its subdirectories and/or files to be listed.
-
-
- Pressing <Esc> takes you up one directory level (if one exists) and
- a new directory listing then appears.
-
- Pressing <F1> causes a tree structure representation of the hard
- disk to appear. You can access any subdirectory displayed in this
- tree structure by highlighting it using the <UpAr>, <DnAr>, <PgUp>,
- <PgDn>, <Home> and <End> keys, and pressing <Enter>. Pressing the
- <Esc> key takes you back to the subdirectory you were in when you
- first displayed the tree structure.
-
- Pressing <F2> exits FileManager in the subdirectory you were in
- when you first executed FileManager. Pressing <F3> exits
- FileManager into the current subdirectory.
-
- FileManager needs the following files available:
-
-
- ∙ FM.EXE ── the main program file.
-
- ∙ FM.OVR ── the overlay file that contains the
- bulk of the program code.
-
- ∙ FM.DAT ── the data file defining colors and
- pathnames of various files.
-
- ∙ FM.PRT ── the printer definition file ── needed
- to be able to send control codes to a
- given printer.
-
-
- For FileManager to be invoked, one of the following must be true:
-
- ∙ you must be in the same subdirectory as FM.EXE,
- FM.OVR, FM.DAT and FM.PRT.
-
- ∙ you must type in the full path name, including the
- disk drive (e.g., c:\fm\fm <Enter> ).
-
- ∙ or, you must be "PATH"-ed into the subdirectory
- through a batch file. If you use the PATH command
- in a batch file, specify the drive in addition to
- the subdirectory. For example, if FM.EXE, FM.OVR,
- FM.DAT and FM.PRT are all in the C:\FM
- subdirectory, in the batch file you could type:
-
- PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\FM
-
-
- Command-Line Parameters
-
-
- Several parameters are available when you first invoke FileManager
- that will cause it to behave in various ways. At the DOS prompt,
- type any of the following parameters and then press <Enter>:
-
-
- Type: fm ? or fm /h
- Effect: FileManager displays a help screen describing the
- following command-line parameters.
-
- Type: fm /a=mmddyy
- Effect: FileManager reads and displays only the files after
- the data specified. If /B is also included on the
- command line (fm /a=mmddyy /b), FileManager displays
- only the files before the date specified.
-
- Type: fm /b
- Effect: FileManager displays the files in the directory
- sorted backwards.
-
- Type: fm /c
- Effect: FileManager does not display the date and clock.
-
- Type: fm /d
- Effect: FileManager displays the files in the directory
- sorted by date and time.
-
- Type: fm /e
- Effect: FileManager displays the files in the directory
- sorted by extension.
-
- Type: fm /f=filename.ext
- Effect: FileManager reads filename.ext instead of FM.DAT
- for setting the colors and pathnames. This allows
- you to use different color schemes and/or programs
- for any particular session.
-
- Type: fm /m
- Effect: FileManager writes differently to the video display
- adapter. If FileManager isn't working properly on
- your monochrome display, and your display uses a
- monochrome adapter, you might try this parameter
- when invoking FileManager ── this will work in some
- cases.
-
- Type: fm /n
- Effect: FileManager does not sort files in a subdirectory.
-
- Type: fm /p=filename.ext
- Effect: FileManager re-directs all printout to a specified
- file. To re-direct the printout to "nothing", type:
- fm /p=nul. This allows you to count lines in a file
- without actually printing the file. To re-direct
- the printout to the serial port, type: fm /p=com1.
- The default for FileManager is: fm /p=lpt1.
-
- Type: fm /r
- Effect: The display is adjusted to the maximum resolution
- available (EGA or VGA, if possible).
-
-
- Type: fm /s
- Effect: FileManager displays the files in the directory
- sorted by size.
-
- Type: fm /t
- Effect: FileManager reads the directory of the disk and when
- <F1> is pressed, the tree structure will instantly
- be displayed.
-
- Any of the above parameters can be combined. For example, to make
- FileManager sort the directory backwards by date and time, you
- would type the following:
-
- fm /d/b
-
-
- You can also tell FileManager what file specification to use. A
- FileManager file specification can be any legal DOS specification,
- including any disk drive/subdirectory or wildcard. For example, to
- list only Pascal text files, you could type:
-
- fm *.pas
-
-
- To select a different input file (for using different color schemes
- or different programs), you could type:
-
- fm /f=blue.dat
-
-
- Pulldown Menus
-
-
- Pulldown Menus can be activated by pressing the letter highlighted
- on the menu at the top of the display. Most menus have several
- options under them ── these can be accessed by pressing <UpAr> or
- <DnAr> until the desired option is highlighted and then pressing
- <Enter>, or by pressing the highlighted letter on the secondary
- menu.
-
- For example, to select "Extract from archive file" from the
- "Archive" menu, you could:
-
- ∙ press <DnAr> 1 time and then press <Enter>
- ∙ press "E"
-
- Or, instead of using the pulldown menus, you could:
-
- ∙ press <Ctl-X>
-
-
- To scroll left or right to the next pulldown menu, press <LtAr> or
- <RtAr>.
-
-
- Note: Throughout this document the phrases "arc",
- "archive" and "zip" refer to any type of
- program that compresses files into a common
- file.
-

-
- There are two ways to access FileManager features:
-
-
- 1) through the pulldown menus, or
- 2) (in most cases) through single keystrokes.
-
-
- To see which features have single keystroke equivalents, press "H"
- for help, and then "K" for by keystroke. A help window will be
- displayed showing the single-keystroke commands.
-
- The following is a quick reference of all the FileManager commands,
- listing the pulldown menu and the single keystrokes need to invoke
- them, and their descriptions.
-
- All commands that are preceded by "*" indicate that they are either
- new or have been changed in FileManager Version 5.2.
-
-
- Menu Keystroke New Description
- ───────── ───────── ─── ──────────────────────────────────────
- A ── A Add to Archive File ── adds all tagged
- files into a subdirectory and archive file
- specified by the user. To add the files
- into an archive file in the current
- subdirectory, just specify the archive
- filename.
-
- A ── E <Ctl-X> Extract from Archive File ── extracts all
- specified files from an archive file. If
- no files are specified, *.* will be
- assumed (except for some versions of LHarc,
- which must be specified as *.*!). The user
- is asked to specify the subdirectory in
- which to "un-arc" the files. Entering
- nothing for this prompt will un-arc into
- the current subdirectory. (For LHarc, if you
- specify a subdirectory, be sure to include
- a "\" at the end!)
-
- A ── M * Move to Archive File ── adds all tagged
- files into a subdirectory and archive file
- specified by the user and then deletes the
- tagged files. To add the files into an
- archive file in the current subdirectory,
- just specify the archive filename.
-
- A ── S * Self-Extracting Archive ── create a self-
- extracting archive file from an existing
- archive file (the archiving program must
- support this feature!).
-
-
- Menu Keystroke New Description
- ───────── ───────── ─── ──────────────────────────────────────
- A ── T Test Archive File ── test the integrity of
- an archive file.
-
- A ── V <Ctl-R> * Verbose Listing of Archive ── display the
- verbose listing of all files inside an
- archive file.
-
- C ── A * Copy: Append Tagged Files into New File
- ── copies all tagged files into a new
- file. If the new file is an existing
- file, the existing file will first be
- erased.
-
- C ── B Copy: Backup Tagged Files to Floppy Disk
- ── copies all tagged files onto floppy
- disks, or other medium. If all files fit
- on a single floppy disk, all files on the
- floppy will be exact copies of the
- originals. If any file does not fit
- entirely on a floppy disk, FileManager's
- Copy/Restore or Copy/Append routine must
- be used to merge the sections of file back
- together.
-
- C ── N <Ctl-N> Copy: Newer Tagged Files ── copies all
- tagged files only if they are newer than
- the same file on the target drive or if
- the file does not exist on the target
- drive.
-
- C ── R Copy: Restore Files from Floppy Disk ──
- the companion to the Copy/Backup command,
